Winter Stakes farewells retiring mares
Saturday's Winter Stakes represents not only the final Group One of Australia's racing season, but also the last chance for Group One glory for a number of retiring mares.
A field of 13 will contest what is shaping up to be a nostalgic Winter Stakes (1400m) for fillies and mares at Eagle Farm, with Saturday's race presenting a number of retiring mares with a final chance to capture an elusive Group One victory.
Gerald Ryan's Melito, on the back of a her TJ Smith win and foursuccessive Group One placings including a laststart second to Black Piranha in the Stradbroke Handicap, is favourite to receive the bulk share of the $500,000 purse, although she will have to contend with the widest barrier. Ryan, who maintains Melito hasn't trained off, also believes that she deserves the accolade of threeyearold Filly of the Year, at the expense of Bart Cummings' Faint Perfume.
The performance of Peter Snowden's spirited mare Beaded, who will be without regular rider Kerrin McEvoy who sustained a back injury in a fall at Gosford, will decide whether she goes to the breeding barn or spelling paddock, whilst Peter Moody's untapped filly Set for Fame should get all the favours from barrier four.
New Zealander Wealth Princess, who holds a fresh edge on her rivals given the majority of them raced through the autumn, will represent an emotional Brent Gillovic for the last time as regardless of the result she will be transferred to Lee Freedman's Melbourne stable.
Those with motherhood beckoning are Anthony Cummings' enigmatic duo Prima Nova and Messenger, and Gai Waterhouse's Gold Water, who is perhaps the most deserving of a win here given the fouryearold's three Group One seconds.
Prima Nova, who finished second in the Winter Stakes last year to Russeting who has since been sent to the breeding barn herself, will also be looking to cap a careerbest season for Cummings.
Of the others, Deer Valley and the John Thompsontrained So Anyway and Happy Hippy will appreciate a fast tempo whilst Thompson's third runner, Readyor, will be looking to make it threestraight wins after a yearlong layoff.
The Eagle Farm card also includes the Group Three WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) which has attracted a strong field including Pinwheel, Ego's Dare, Hay List and First Command whilst the Group Three Tattersall's Cup (2200m) sees the Hawkestrained Rainbow Styling set to redeem himself after disappointing as favourite in last year's Tattersall's Cup.
