Sydney Sixers pull off a miracle win against Titans in T20 semi
The Champions League Twenty20 roared to life in the early hours of this morning when the Sydney Sixers beat the Titans in a finalball thriller.
The Sixers were shortpriced favourites heading into the semifinal of the lucrative tournament in South Africa, and expected to cruise through to Monday morning's final against Highveld.
But then opener Henry Davids (59 not out) and David Wiese (61 not out off 28 balls) went on the attack, slamming a whopping 72 runs off the final four overs.
Pat Cummins in particular came under heavy fire, finishing with the shocking figures of 151 off four overs as the Titans reached 5163.
But Cummins, 19, made sure he repaid his teammates with interest with the bat, hanging around for a brave unbeaten 14 runs to help the men in magenta pull off a miracle.
The Sixers needed 19 runs off the final two overs, then just eight off the last over, courtesy of a straight six by Cummins.
Two runs were required off the final two balls, then just a single for the win.
Titans quick CJ de Villiers steamed in, pitched it short, Cummins swung and missed but somehow scampered through to the other end for the win. He collided with de Villiers and had to crawl across the line before he celebrated.
Teammate Steve O'Keefe couldn't watch the final three balls and hid in the bathroom.
He praised Cummins for holding his nerve at the death, and pointed out he had done likewise in a T20 international against Pakistan only a couple of months earlier for Australia.
Patty is still a good striker of the ball, and he works just as hard on his batting as he does his bowling,'' O'Keefe said.
We had 'Starcy' (Mitchell Starc) who's a good hitter, and I still rate Hoff' (Josh Hazlewood) with the bat. We got their on our knees, literally, as he (Cummins) crawled over line, and I think good sides can win when they're not playing their best cricket, and that's the positive we can take out of this game.''
Coach Corey Richards praised Cummins for keeping his cool, while O'Keefe added: Sometimes when you chat to him you forget you're chatting to a 19yearold.
I guess that's one of his characteristics, growing up at Penrith, which is pretty close to Richmond, where we grew up, You learn pretty quickly out there.
He's been in those pressure situations in Test matches, and even when they needed seven off two in the T20 game against Pakistan, and he hit first ball for six.''
While Cummins was the man of the moment, it was not all good news for Sydney with skipper and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin to undergo scans for a suspected busted left thumb.
Haddin looked in discomfort when he landed awkwardly in the fourth over trying to stop a Mitchell Starc delivery. He then further aggravated it the following over when a Cummins delivery flew past him.
The twowicket triumph won't be forgotten by the Sixers players or the thousands of fans at Centurion any time soon,www.floware.fr.
They will take plenty of momentum heading into the tournament's final where a $2.5 million winner's purse awaits.
A couple of silly runouts and the fourover lateinnings blitz by the Titans is sure to give the Sixers something to think about over the next 48 hours.
